According to some users reporting on Twitter, a viral message is being distributed on WhatsApp tricking them to download the 'WhatsApp Gold' version, which in reality is a malware to infect the smartphones.

The message says that 'WhatsApp Gold' was until now used by 'big celebrities' and includes some new features like video calling, ability to send 100 images at once, free calling, ability to change WhatsApp themes and more. The message also says that the 'WhatsApp Gold' is not available to all users and can be installed only via invitation.

The invitation link given inside the message is www.goldenversion.com, clicking on which for now leads to an error 404 message. It is not yet clear as to how many people have been affected by the scam. The app is not available on Apple App store or Google Play store.

This new scam is similar to the previous 'WhatsApp Plus' scam. WhatsApp has already said that it will ban the devices that include this unauthorised malware. "WhatsApp Plus is an application that was not developed by WhatsApp, nor is it authorised by WhatsApp," says the company in its FAQ page.

The company also says that it would never ask its users to upgrade or download another app, over text messages. The company says it would reach its users over official point of contact like emails. We would recommend users to not click on the given link inside the massage.

According to a recent report, WhatsApp is now the most popular instant messaging application in 109 countries, which is roughly 55.6% of the world. The firm has over a billion monthly active users. The report further adds that it has over 70 million users in India alone.
